Biomass is a renewable energy source that is derived from biological materials including organic waste. Termochemical processes such as pyrolysis and gasification, can be used to convert biomass to various forms of energy without the generation of greenhouse gases. It is believed that the pyrolysis of biomass is a clean technology has the potential to contribute significantly to the world's need for liquid fuels and, ultimately, for the production of chemicals. However, a number of challenges remain before this promising approach can be commercially implemented on a wide scale.
The long-term objectives of the proposed research program are to understand and address the technical challenges that hinder the implementation of biomass-fueled generation projects such as the production of co-products, upgraded bio oil, and value added chemicals from biomass. Research studies will be undertaken to develop more efficient approaches for biomass processing, thereby increasing the cost-effectiveness of this promising technology. Specifically, the anticipated outcomes of this work are (i) the development of efficient, environmentally sustainable methods for processing biomass to generate a stable bio-oil, and value added chemicals such as phenol, and (ii) the commercialization of fast pyrolysis technologies.. The development of the proposed technologies effectively diversifies the Canadian economy without a negative impact on the environment. These energy sources are sustainable and acceptable to the values of Canadians. This work supports the fulfillment of global goals to develop long-term greenhouse gas mitigation technologies with specific focus on the energy sector. Programs such as the one being proposed will allow Canada to establish itself as the pioneer country for the reduction of CO2 emissions on a global scale. This research program moves Canada further along this spectrum, the work supports the greening of power generation sectors, chemical and petroleum industries through the utilization of waste biomass and reduced CO2.
