Self-Management Mechanisms for Clouds Assisting Mobile Users

Mobile cloud computing paradigms provide a promising vision to finally close the existing gap between the resource-constrained mobile devices and bandwidth-limited wireless networks on the one side and the wide spread of a plethora of applications with high computational and communication needs (e.g., speech and face recognition and interactive massive gaming) on the other. The proposed research project aims at realizing this vision through the development of a self-configuring management architecture for the clouds that can efficiently serve the mobile users while optimizing the usage of the cloud resources. More precisely, the project will focus on solving three major research problems; the first addresses the self-provisioning of cloud-enabled mobile application components that can dynamically adapt their dual (local and offloaded to clouds) executions. The second problem deals with the customization of public clouds to serve mobile users by developing efficient means for the placement and migration of mobile and scalable virtual machines. The third problem relates to the long-term interactions and cooperation among cloud providers. The research project will follow a cross-layer design that incorporates various pieces of information available from different protocol layers in realizing different management functionalities such as application partitioning, device cloning, dynamic cloud resource scaling, and collaborative sharing of wireless resources among users and cloud providers. The realization of mobile devices with virtual unlimited capabilities will usher in a new era of services to mobile users. These services will fulfill emerging public needs and create unique profit opportunities within the private sector.
