Remotely Piloted Vehicles (RPVs) or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming an increasingly important and economical way to provide remotely sensed and in-situ data on the environment. This is especially true in the Arctic where dramatic changes are occurring to the climate system and where conventional ways to monitor these changes are expensive and/or non-existent. This proposal will allow PrecisionHawk, a leading Canadian company with an expertise in the development of UAVs, to partner with Professor Kent Moore, a leading Canadian researcher in Arctic Meteorology, in order to develop the capability of using their UAVs in the observing and monitoring of Arctic sea ice and boundary-layer meteorology. The technology to be developed will help improve our understanding of the climate of the Arctic as well as having commercial importance for resource extraction, route-planning and weather forecasting in the region.
