Cable shovels are extensively used in mining equipment for the extraction of minerals and precious metals. An
important physical variable that has to be continuously monitored is the weight of the payload inside the Cable
Shovel dipper with maximum capacities reaching 120 tonnes per scoop carried by massive haul trucks with
capacities of about 400 tonnes. Overloading these mining machines can reduce their engine and tire life, cause
fatigue, and result in early failure, which lead to excessive maintenance costs for the mining industry. The
proposed Engage activity investigates the feasibility of monitoring the payload inside a cable shovel dipper by
analyzing the cable shovel bail strain. The proposed activity will investigate determining the placement of
strain sensors and how the sensory system can be made robust in a harsh mining environment which is subject
to dust, vibration, and temperature variations.
