The goal of this project is to characterize paraffin fouling from Canadian crude oils, and the development of
chemical-based mitigation strategies for this costly phenomena. It will be a concerted effort between academic
staff from the University of Alberta (Dr. Waghmare) and the National Research Council (National Institute for
Nanotechnology), and a number of companies from the Canadian oil and gas industry, to understand and
provide solution to specific instances of paraffin fouling in oil production systems. The project encourages
collaboration, and will benefit from the combined industrial involvement, advanced analytical capacity and the
application of core fundamentals. There will be four distinct areas in which this project will be followed: crude
oil characterization, paraffin deposit characterization, model system development and inhibitor selection. The
result will be an effective, analytical workflow for selecting appropriate chemical inhibitors, based upon
well-characterized system properties, and the application of both novel and recognized chemistries.
Collectively, qualified academic and industrial scientists and engineers will work towards developing
technology and solutions relevant to the Canadian economy.
