Force Feedback Interface for Spiri

Spiri is a personal, programmable flying robot under development by Halifax-based company, Pleiades. It features a wide variety of sensors and measurement instrumentation that can be better utilized for improved human-machine interaction. Pleiades is currently seeking to explore new ways to improve the control of the robot by a human user in an effective and intuitive manner through the use of force feedback haptics. The applicant's research group, Applied Dynamics Group, at McGill has been developing novel navigational techniques for robot control using force feedback that can be further developed and implemented on the Spiri system. McGill's expertise in force-feedback haptics, control systems, sampled-data systems, and dynamic modelling will be required for the design and implementation of the human-computer interface for the Spiri. We expect that the solution of these company-specific problems will cultivate a long-term collaboration between the applicant and Pleiades and advance the company to the cutting edge of human-machine interaction.
