Sectek is a leader in offering the IP video surveillance service to both small and large organizations. The
objective of this research project is to help the company enhance the effectiveness of its video surveillance
systems at construction jobsites. The focus is placed on how to improve the planning and evaluation of the
camera deployment of the video surveillance system at a construction jobsite from the project owner's
perspective. A novel methodology is proposed here to find a camera deployment option that provides the
project owner with the maximum return on investment (ROI) during construction activities. The methodology
starts with modeling the camera views of a video surveillance system to estimate the jobsite coverage for
potential camera deployments. Then, the ROI of the system is analyzed based on the capture of the construction
information under the coverage. This way, the camera deployment that provides the maximum ROI could be
identified. The methodology will be integrated into the practice for designing video surveillance systems in
Sectek. It is expected to reduce the designing waste and rework in Sectek, considering the effectiveness of the
systems is currently often achieved through experience and trial-and-error. It will increase the competitiveness
of Secktek, when designing the video surveillance systems for monitoring construction projects. Also, it will
bring overall benefits to Canada, when the designed systems are implemented at construction jobsites.
