The proposed project will study radio propagation in cluttered indoor environments where short range 5G wireless communication links could be implemented at frequencies between 2 and 30 GHz. A selected, real-world, indoor, environment will be modelled using software, and software ray tracing will be used to predict both the narrowband and the wideband characteristics of radio links between transmitter/receiver pairs located within the selected environment in accordance with an agreed-upon probability density function. Cumulative probability distributions will then be reported for radio channel characteristics of interest, which will include: transmission loss, multipath delay window, and rms delay spread, as well as angles of reception and departure for both primary path signal components, as well as secondary path (for diversity) and multipath signal components. A vector network analyzer will then be used to measure data from which sample wireless channel characteristics can be estimated for comparison with, and calibration of, the ray tracing results. The final report will include comparisons of ray tracing & measurement results, as well as a comparison of wireless channel characteristics at several different centre frequencies within the 2 GHz-30 GHz range.
