Current production of lightweight components is limited by existing materials or processes. Sandwich structures, which combine relatively thin components with high structural integrity and lightweight cores, offer a route to combine lightweight with cost effective processing. Mechanical properties of sandwich structures depend on the mechanical properties of the skin and core components, but also the adhesive bond between the skin-core components. Processing of such sandwich structures usually involves multiple processing steps, which adds cost. In this work we will examine thermoplastic and thermoset composite polymer skins, which will be processed such that there is an over molding of the core to create an integral sandwich structure in one process.
