英文摘要
Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada and second largest in the Pacific Northwest. With the growing population in Vancouver and its neighbouring cities, the Vancouver metropolitan area is seeing an upsurge in high-rise construction. With a high population concentrated in these buildings, failure or severe damage of this type of buildings after an earthquake could result in devastating financial, social, and life losses. Since most of these high-rises are residential, loss of functionality and lack of resiliency will lead to massive temporary housing demands and prolonged recovery. The typical high-rise construction uses reinforced concrete shear walls (RCSWs) with flat plates. These RCSWs are very efficient in resisting the lateral loads during an earthquake. However, as a building becomes taller, the associated deflection and overturning moment become excessively large. This results in thicker RCSWs, larger footprint, and reduced saleable space within the building. The primary purpose of the proposed research is to develop an outrigger system consisted of deep and stiff beams to couple RCSWs and perimeter columns. Such a system creates a counteracting moment at the top of RCSWs to reduce deflection and overturning moment due to lateral loads. In addition, designated energy dissipation devices will be incorporated into the outrigger system so that the overall structure will have multiple performance criteria at different seismic hazard levels. The success of the research allows an outrigger improved high-rise to be earthquake resilient and structural efficient. This NSERC Engage Grant will create a strong collaboration between the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Read Jones Christoffersen (RJC) engineering consulting firm. The practical outcome of the proposed research is a design guideline for high-rise buildings with resilient outrigger systems. This guideline will immediately benefit the design community and allow innovative structural technologies to be used in high-rise construction.
