Ad hoc networks aim at providing communications when everything else is not possible. There are scenarios where this is indeed the case such as tactical field communications, natural catastrophes and emergencies. My goal is to contribute towards secure communications over ad hoc networks to a level comparable to the one achieved on infrastructure networks (e.g., cellular networks). This is challenging because ad hoc networks do not offer the resources and stability presented by infrastructure networks. My long term objectives are: - Elaborate original protocol elements leading to secure communications over ad hoc networks. - Investigate the interaction between security and quality-of-service in ad hoc networks. - Put together solutions that use ad hoc networks to solve communication issues in real life scenarios. I favour a holistic approach where highly interacting practical aspects related to security management are simultaneously taken into account, such as fault-tolerance, reconfiguration, accounting and performance. Theory and practice are combined. Sound principles are developed based on realistic and verified assumptions. I will dedicate most of my research time to wireless communications security. For the upcoming years, I want to concentrate on three particular areas enabled by emerging technologies: - Adaptive protocols for multimedia traffic over ad hoc networks, taking into account security and quality-of-service. - Secure common channel selection by secondary spectrum users in cognitive ad hoc wireless networks. - Handovers from infrastructure to ad hoc networks, taking into account security and efficiency. - Robust link-state routing in ad hoc networks, taking into account security, efficiency and quality-of-service.
