英文摘要
The overall objective of the applicant’s research program is to develop basic knowledge on the mechanical behaviour of engineering alloys and the application of this knowledge to industrial processes and applications. This proposal specifically addresses problems where there is a lack of knowledge which hinders the optimal use of engineering alloys in their application. Specifically, the proposal focuses on i) the origin of strength in aluminum alloys strengthened by atomic clusters, ii) the development of new approaches to find optimal chemical compositions for magnesium alloys, iii) the development of experimental data and mathematical models needed to apply magnesium alloys in conditions found in industry (i.e. multiaxial deformation conditions) and iv) to study the propagation of ultrasonic waves in engineering alloys so that new sensors can be developed to quantitatively measure microstructure evolution during heat treatment (ultimately a tool that can be applied in industry).
The impact of the work relates to the need for new improved alloys in the transportation and energy sectors. These improved alloys will allow for i) reduced emissions due to light weighting of the vehicles (reduced fuel consumption in automobiles, trucks, airplanes and ships), ii) improved safety of vehicles (e.g. better crash performance) and iii) more efficient and safer energy transportation systems (e.g. gas and oil pipelines). Finally, this proposal will support the education of 6-7 highly educated engineers and scientists which are in high demand from Canadian industry, universities and government laboratories.
