Endogenous retroelements (EREs) are genetic elements that replicate themselves throughout the genome by transcription to RNA and then back to DNA.  Most vertebrate genomes contain remnants of hundreds types of EREs that have accumulated over millions of years, often with thousands of copies of each scattered throughout the genome.  EREs are a major contributor to the formation of new DNA regulatory regions, as they carry binding sites for transcription factors (TFs).
