Polymer materials are used in many applications and over 2/3 of materials that people touch every day is made of polymers. Polymer nanocomposites (polymer matrices holding nanofillers) have drawn much attention as they benefit from inherent properties of both polymer matrix and nanofiller. Polymer nanocomposites are considered materials of the future and can access property combinations previously unachievable with single materials. Nanocomposites are currently used in high-tech applications. It is currently a $2 Billion dollar industry, and is predicted to triple in size in the next three years, yet there is little understanding about how manufacturing and structure affects the final properties. A more developed field is polymer blends (a mixture of two or more polymers) and it is estimated that over 80% of plastic materials sold today are actually blends.
