NSERC Senior Industrial Research Chair in Advancing Treatment and Reducing Risk

The NSERC Chair in Water Treatment at the University of Waterloo functions as a centre of expertise in water treatment and quality. The Chair's mission is to conduct leading edge, fundamentally based, yet practically oriented research on critical issues related to water treatment and quality. Our research emphasis is on work that addresses the short- to medium-term needs of our funding partners, which include municipalities, consultants and industry involved in the treatment and provision of water. Research conducted over the five year period (2013-2017) of the Chair term as outlined in this proposal and supported by NSERC and our partners will measure and optimize the performance of water treatment systems in terms of reduced risk to public health. We have defined three major research themes for the 5th Chair term, which are: A. Risk-based Decision Making, which will develop tools that utilities can use for assessing and quantifying treatment in terms of identified health risks. B. Advancing Treatment, which includes research on understanding and optimizing biofiltration, membrane filtration, chemical contaminant removal, and conventional treatment performance. C. Sustainable Water Systems, which will investigate potential applications and strategies for municipal water reuse.
