项目摘要
The NSERC Industrial Research Chair renewal is intended to expand on existing strengths and talents to
undertake a major research endeavour in science and engineering of interest to industry. The program is
supported by the federal government through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council
(NSERC) of Canada and through a consortium of industrial partners with an interest in nuclear energy. The
objectives of nuclear research at McMaster University are aligned with the Federal Government's identified
Science and Technology priorities of Environmental Science and Technology and Natural Resources and
Energy as well as the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation's focus area of Clean Technology. The
proposal is consistent with McMaster University's strategic plan which has identified nuclear energy as an
emerging area which can potentially reduce man's carbon footprint an improve quality of living both at home
and in emerging countries.
The research focuses of the NSERC/UNENE Industrial Research Chair and Associate Chair is nuclear reactor
safety, severe accident phenomena, and accident risk and mitigation. Both Chairs are regarded as national
experts in these areas. Given the profound ramifications of the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, there is
renewed interest from the public and private sectors on accident modelling and the use of simulations to
develop/demonstrate the most effective mitigation methods. The drivers for this research program are to
perform research related to nuclear reactor safety, generate top quality graduates for the nuclear industry, and
provide expert resources for industry, government and media consultations.
