The recently-discovered world-class Black Thor - Black Label chromite deposit in the McFaulds Lake ("Ring of Fire") area of northern Ontario will make Canada a major produce of this strategic metal. However, exploration for additional resources requires that we understand why these particular rocks contain so much chromite when so many other rocks in Ontario and elsewhere with apparently similar compositions contain so little chromite. This project will use state-of-the-art geological, mineralogical, textural, geochemical, and isotopic analytical methods to evaluate how the magma that formed the rocks was generated, how so much chromite accumulated, and how to recognize this process in other areas. It will train 1 PhD student and 3 MSc students, contribute to our knowledge of these deposits in particular and chromite deposits in general, and aid in mineral exploration in the McFaulds Lake area and elsewhere in the world.
