The best strategy for Canada's heavy oil upgrading should include removal of sulfur and nitrogen and significant increase of hydrogen content, which can only be achieved with catalytic technologies. The project proposes to develop an efficient 4-in-1 hydrodesulfurization/ hydrodenitrogenation/ hydrogenation/ hydrocracking catalyst to improve product quality at lower operational expenses from current cobalt- or nickel-promoted molybdenum materials. The new catalyst will include elements more abundant in the Earth's crust at a comparable price to the conventional one; it may become a viable alternative for improving bitumen upgrading operations.
