In this project we will study, in collaboration with KBL Environmental, Ltd., methods to declassify and valorize char that is a byproduct of the production of biofuels from municipal waste. While the production of biofuels from municipal waste diverts solid waste from landfills, the char byproduct was found to contain elevated levels of naphthalene, such that it must be disposed of in Class 1 landfills. The first objective is to develop appropriate stabilization and solidification techniques to ensure that naphthelene does not leach out of the char, so that it can be disposed of in standard Class 2 landfills at a much reduced cost. Secondly, we aim in the longer-term to identify alternative uses for the char material, for example as a sorbent to remove metal and organic contaminants from water or to clean up syngas in gasification facilities. To do so, extensive
