Pipelines transporting liquid hydrocarbons are continuously monitored using computational pipeline monitoring systems to detect hydraulic irregularities in fluid flow and volumes, which may be indicative of release events (that is, leaks). These systems provide an effective means of detecting large releases in real time; yet they have shown only limited success in detecting smaller release rates. Unfortunately, small release events that go unnoticed over prolonged periods of time may cause significant environmental impact.
