Yunhai IOC, a control plane solution designed by NewData Technology Corporation (NewData) for Software Defined Networks consisting of Inspur SmartRack products, which together provide a network solution for data centers to reduce the cost in network maintenance, to improve network resource usage and support fine-grained network management. However, the applications of the current product are limited to small or medium sized networks. It cannot meet the requirements of large sized networks in cloud computing data centers to support multiple network tenants, each of which may need an isolated network to run its applications under its particular policy. To address these shortcomings, this project aims to design a control plane solution with network virtualization and integrate the solution into the NewData product. Present network virtualization solutions can be integrated into current Yunhai IOC controller, but cannot fully take the advantage of the unified management interface provided by Inspur SmartRack to centralized manage all the modules in a cabinet to facilitate fine-grained network management, and incurs big change in current Yunhai IOC architecture. The goal of our project is to investigate the issue of virtualizing networks in Yunhai IOC controller, and develop a network virtualization solution for Yunhai IOC to provide centralized module management and network isolation among virtual networks in a large cloud computing data center. The project is organized into two phases: the existing network virtualization research phase and the new solution prototyping and evaluation phase. The main challenge is to develop a network virtualization solution to (1) isolate virtual networks, (2) centrally configure, monitor, and manage all the modules inside a cabinet, (3) retain compatibility with Yunhai IOC's existing architecture. Our proposed work on network virtualization is expected to put NewData and Inspur Group in a unique and strong competitive position as a cloud computing solution provider for large data centers worldwide. This project is expected to create many new jobs at NewData to exploit the results, and to significantly increase revenue and export of products from Canada.
