This proposal concerns high-performance, discontinuous engineered materials subject to stringent requirements on meso-scale geometry, constitutive behaviour and physical properties.
The proposal covers 1) further development of predictive particle-based modelling of the geometry and constitutive behaviour of technical textiles at the scales of fibres, yarns, unit cells and fabrics; 2) in-situ IR thermography used in probing technical textiles for inspection; 3) application of modelling and IR probing to engineered carbon fibre preforms for composites, biomedical textiles and other advanced textiles.
The proposal funds students doing fundamental work running and further developing particle-based simulations for a large array of industrial textiles and load cases; validating the simulations through experimental work; developing knowledge and models for the novel use of IR inspection for characterizing dry textiles made from multi-filament yarns and assemblies; and combining predictive modelling and IR inspection towards remote assessment of textile structures as loaded in the field, focusing on preforms, artificial ligaments and grafts, paper machine clothing and other textile structures. The proposal takes the next logical steps from work done under the PI's 2010-15 Discovery grant, and new objectives arising from ongoing applied projects. It is distinct in covering fundamental work not targeted as deliverable in current projects. Applications of this proposal’s fundamental work will be visited in this proposal, and in future projects. The proposal features projects A, B and C as follows. The software and experimental infrastructure required is established.
Project A applies and further develops particle-based, multi-scale concurrent models of the geometry and constitutive behaviour of dry textiles subjected to various load cases. The physics-based modelling framework does not rely on empirical models; it is unique in modelling yarns as assemblies of fibres or clusters of fibres as opposed to continua, and in returning both elastic and time-dependent responses for materials made of strictly elastic fibres – time dependence results from stochastic rearrangement of fibres in time, in simulations as in experiments.
Project B develops robust expertise on the probing of dry textiles as discontinuous, heterogeneous and deformable assemblies of fibres featuring numerous interfaces and variable inter-fibre contacts using IR thermography, through experimental and modelling work. Limitations are also probed. This work relates to unique knowledge of the thermal conductivity of textiles, developed by the PI’s team.
Project C connects predictive modelling from project A with knowledge from project B towards field inspection of carbon fibre preforms, biomedical textiles, paper-making clothing and other advanced textiles. The PI has ongoing activity with these textiles.
