Cloud computing is a computing paradigm that enables pervasive access to computing resources through the internet. Cloud providers deliver computing infrastructure as service or software as a service to tenants who pay as per use and do not need heavy upfront investments on hardware and software. Cloud computing is enabling novel internet of things based applications that take advantage of cloud computation power and communication bandwidth. Cloud computing is at the brink of massive scale deployment or ubiquity. The main obstacles are availability, security and management.Cloud systems must be scalable, adapt to the workload and make efficient use of resources, efficient, i.e. exhibit the required level of performance, and available as we will be more and more dependent on cloud services. On the other hand, cloud systems undergo very frequent upgrades, to remain available these upgrades must be performed live, i.e. while the system is providing services.The proposed research program, led by the Industrial Research Chair, will provide a distinct advantage to the Canadian computing and telecommunications industries. Through investigations on modeling, requirement engineering, configuration techniques, Service Level Agreement management, monitoring architectures, dynamic reconfiguration, live upgrade and live testing and diagnosis, the quality, dependability and management of cloud systems will be considerably improved.Continued collaboration with Ericsson, a major player in telecommunications Research and Development in Canada, will ensure that the developed architectures and techniques, and the derived tools will be transferred to a highly productive user. Graduate students will be involved at each stage of this program of research; it is our goal to provide these students with an exceptional level of experience at both Concordia and Ericsson's facilities so that they may enter the workforce with the skills required to strengthen the position of Canadian industry in the global market.
