The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become the preeminent method of outdoor positioning and navigation. From GPS, the global community is developing multiple satellite-based navigation systems or Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). Research has focused on improvement of receiver (and antenna) design and data processing algorithms, which have driven unpredicted application growth and diversity. Most contemporary high-precision algorithm development has focused on applications spanning localized areas (e.g., few tens of kilometres), utilizing costly GNSS infrastructure, particularly reference stations, to reduce systematic measurement errors. The fundamental goal of the proposed research program is to improve the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) positioning and navigation measurement processing algorithms to perform few centimetre-level positioning anywhere on or above the Earth without the necessity of local reference stations and long observation periods. That is, to develop PPP technology to perform like Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) without its significant limitations. I propose to build on my team's previous and current novel research. There are three aims proposed in the research plan: 1) the development of a innovative multi-GNSS PPP user processor, 2) the development of robust PPP ambiguity resolution and validation approaches, and 3) the development of a PPP user algorithm capable of initial convergence in tens of seconds. Research results will be used, through the dissemination of algorithms and methods via publications, technology transfers and commercialization, to modernize precise positioning and navigation, which will increase productivity and improve safety-of-life applications across numerous economic sectors in Canada and abroad, and advance scientific applications.
