Nutrients enter into lakes through point and non-point sources are finally settled in bottom sediments wherethey accumulate and eventually release back into the overlaying water. Sediment phosphorus release is one ofthe main reasons for eutrophication in many shallow lakes around the world. This present study examinessediment samples collected from Lake Caron, a eutrophic lake to understand the potential removal ofphosphorus from the sediment using a resuspension technique coupled with filtration. The average Pconcentrations in the Lake Caron sediments ranged between 908 and1310 mg/kg P. Depending on the chemicalforms of P in the sediments, significant sediment P release was observed at both acidic and alkaline conditionsand thus could have a significant influence on lake water quality. It is proposed to develop a filtrationtechnology with geotextile technology with Texel for the removal of organic matter, algae and nutrients. Thesystem will done in the laboratory and will consist of a tank, tubing and aeration for suspension of sediments, apump for removal of the suspended material and a filtration apparatus for removal of the water from thesuspended matter. Trials in the laboratory will begin early spring using various samples of phosphoruscontaining sediments taken in 2017. Nonwoven geotextiles (Texel) will be used as the filter materials forsuspended matter from resuspension of sediments. Various pore size geotextiles will be evaluated to determinethe optimal for removal of nutrient based resuspended sediment. As the ice melts, fresh surface sedimentsamples will be obtained from Lac Caron. Filtration tests will determine removal of organic matter, SS,nutrients from the sediments. Development of the filtration module will significantly expand the applicabilityof the geotextiles for sediment treatment to reduce occurrence of blooms due to high nutrient levels. Variousgeotextiles will be evaluated. The protection and improvement of the water quality by nutrient reduction willimprove the aesthetics of the water, health of the community and allow the water to be used for recreationalpurposes and will ensure the protection of the property values.
