RBF International Ltée (head office in Saint-Jérôme, QC) develops, manufactures and sells chemicals for waterdisinfection. The chemicals they develop are mainly used for treating water in pools and spas, however, theseproducts are also important for environmental remediation and agriculture applications.This company is currently searching solutions for water treatment that are based on stabilized hydrogenperoxide, rather than traditional chlorine-based formulations. The use of hydrogen peroxide enables thedisinfection of water with no chlorinated organic by-products or chloramines, which have negative healtheffects. It is very important to determine the long-term stability of the stabilized hydrogen peroxide in watersamples to prove its effectiveness as a water disinfectant.In particular, the goal of this NSERC-funded project will be to understand what conditions are necessary toextend the duration and effectiveness of the peroxide in the treated water. Several conditions will beinvestigated to improve the reliability of water disinfection using hydrogen peroxide formulations.The applicant, Professor Mathieu Frenette, is an expert in the chemistry of peroxides and the oxidation oforganic material by peroxides. This project that RBF International Ltée has proposed to professor Frenette'sresearch group aims to validate hydrogen peroxide as a reliable option as a disinfectant for water in pools andspas.
