In recent years, Trenchless Technology (TT) methods have assumed an essential role in minimizing disruptionsto traffic, business and other activities during the construction of transmission pipelines. Due to two majorfactors, which are cost and risk, trenchless methods are only considered in brown field wherever there are noother feasible options. In residential land development, open cut method is used for the construction of landinfrastructure such as water supply, sewers, power grids and telecommunications. However, in cold region likeAlberta, the construction season for open cut is only 6-7 months each year and land developers generally do notinstall shallow utilities during the winter season. The proposed research will investigate the feasibility of usingTT in residential land development and compare TT and conventional open cut methods in terms of costs,schedule and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Landmark, the industrial partner of the project, will providethe opportunity of a small-scale field trial in a multi-family residential project. The research team willinvestigate applicability of different TT methods in residential land development, analyze the risks associatedwith each TT method, quantify GHG emissions in the construction processes, compare cost and schedule, andstudy the social impacts of TT and conventional open-cut method. Using TT in utility pipeline installation hasthe potential to extend the construction season of land infrastructure in cold regions, decrease the project costand reduce the environment impacts.
