This is a request for a cutting-edge mitochondrial bioenergetics system that can simultaneously determine several aspects of mitochondrial function. Cells consume oxygen while breaking down food to produce energy (ATP). The historical gold-standard for assessing mitochondrial function reflects determining rates of oxygen consumption and this methodology has become the corner-stone of our research programs. However, a major limitation of this approach is that rates of ATP production are not determined, which is the ultimate goal of oxidative phosphorylation. The requested piece of equipment will enable simultaneous assessments of oxygen consumption and ATP production, negating this methodological limitation, while also enabling more diverse and biologically relevant mechanistic studies to be designed.
