The Global Observing System for Climate (GCOS) committee defines Essential Climatic Variables (ECV) as those “observations required for monitoring the climate system, for detecting and attributing climate change, for assessing the impacts of climate variability and change, and for supporting research toward improved understanding, modelling and prediction of the climate system.” In this context, two of those variables: the Fraction of Photosynthetic Active Radiation (FPAR), and Soil Moisture (SM) play an important role in biophysical modeling using remote sensing techniques.
