This research program seeks to develop and apply new techniques for biomechanical analysis. In the laboratory, a new type of instrumented treadmill will be developed to emulate real-world conditions such as complex or uneven terrains, which challenge the balance of older adults and amputees, but are not well represented by conventional equipment. In the real world, wearable sensors will be used for long-term data collection of daily activities, and algorithms developed to reconstruct actions with accuracy similar to laboratory motion capture. Both laboratory and real-world techniques will accelerate the study of mobility impairments and new rehabilitation technologies.
