The proposed project will encompass topics in the theory and applications of microwave imaging and detection. The focus is on applications of great social importance such as non-invasive diagnostics for early stage breast-cancer detection and concealed weapon detection for public security and surveillance in buildings and transportation. Further applications may include non-destructive testing for structural integrity as well as underground and behind-the-wall surveillance. Novel engineering systems will be developed to harness the ability of microwaves to penetrate where sound and optical waves fail and to produce images which will guide diagnosis, decision making, and maintenance routines.
