The Milky Way's disk, home to the Earth, Solar System, and a hundred billion stars, is a majestic object in the dark sky. Yet after a century of detailed study, many of its most basic properties such as its scale, mass, chemical structure, and the number and properties of stars formed at different epochs are poorly understood. Jo Bovy's research leverages the power of large new data sets in combination with sophisticated statistical techniques to make definitive measurements of the Milky Way's structure and history. This work provides important new insights into the physics of galaxy formation and dark matter.
