Chemical manufacturing and processing efforts are >$1000 billion contributors to the World economy (>$65 billion in Canada alone) but are often significant contributors to waste and pollution. Research conducted by the CRC chairholder will provide the chemical industry with novel processes to generate the molecules needed with minimal environmental impact. Specifically, this research programs aims at designing catalysts - molecules and materials that makes chemical reactions more efficient and less polluting. The particular focus of this research is to use nanoparticles as catalysts. The nanoparticles used are made of earth-abundant and non-toxic materials (i.e. iron and cellulose), and are designed to be recovered and reused, so as to limit the waste generated.
