High-speed impact is a fundamental process within our Solar System: it is responsible for planet building and planet modification, and has influenced the evolution of life on Earth. The proposed research program will focus on the high strain rate behaviour of planetary materials, with emphasis on describing and understanding friction and shock phenomena. Samples from terrestrial impact structures, as well as lunar, martian and asteroid materials, will be characterized to better comprehend their response to conditions of extreme loading and deformation. This will be achieved by field studies, mission science, and experimental work, while providing world-class training opportunities for students.
