My research aims to improve representation of key physics in ice sheet simulations. Such simulations are increasingly used to assess possible rates of future sea level rise under climate change, and better constraints on ice sheet behaviour were identified as a key goal in the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In particular, I will address the dynamics of subglacial melt water drainage and its effect on ice flow speeds. This has been observed as a key process in both, Antarctica and Greenland, but there are currently only crude models available. My research will aim to incorporate current understanding into improved models, to constrain these models using field observations, and explore their implications for glacier and ice sheet behaviour as well as water discharge from these ice masses.
