Radioisotopes of certain elements, whether from nuclear activities or naturally occurring, are found at exceedingly low concentrations in our environment. They can be useful as tracers in geological and biological systems, but can also pose a radiation hazard. The objective of my research begins with the development of techniques to measure their low concentrations using the unique capabilities of an accelerator mass spectrometer, which allows very low radioisotope concentrations to be measured in very small samples. We will then employ these techniques to address the behaviour of radioisotopes in the environment and their use as radio-tracers in biomedical applications.
