Over 80% of the world's freshwater is in 10 large lakes. These aquatic ecosystems behave very differently from small lakes and require special research, monitoring and management programs. In order to understand the effects of multiple stressors on these unique ecosystems, we have developed novel environmental tracer technology that allows us to directly quantify changes in nutrient, contaminant and energy flow critical to sustaining the food webs supported by these large lakes systems. Research is implemented in the Laurentian Great Lakes (Erie, Huron and well as the Huron-Erie Corridor), the Three Gorges Reservoir (China) and the Malili Lakes of Indonesia.
