As the Canadian population ages, much remains to be known about why individual older adults follow dramatically different patterns of aging. Although some aging individuals maintain high levels of biological vitality and cognitive functioning, most follow typical decline patterns, while increasing numbers experience accelerated and degenerative losses. My research program seeks to understand the (a) variety of cognitive changes that occur in aging and (b) roles of precursors, diseases, and other conditions associated with healthy or impaired cognitive outcomes. Accordingly, I conduct a large-scale, long-term, and interdisciplinary longitudinal study of aging. Results are of theoretical, epidemiological, and public health significance.
