The proposed research program is broadly based in the area of quantum photonics. The work aims to study both the fundamental science of photonics and also to develop applications based on this acquired knowledge. The research entails the nanofabrication of structures and devices to perform useful tasks and to study fundamental properties of light-matter interactions. Specific topics include the exotic and useful properties of materials under conditions of a vanishingly small dielectric constant; nanofabrication of ultra-miniature chip-scale spectrometers that deliver similar performance to laboratory scale instruments; enhanced image-forming methods that make direct use of the quantum properties of light fields.
