ACQBUILT is one of the leading off-site home builders in North America. It is currently producing panelized floors, panelized walls and volumetric roof modules at its factory in Edmonton. These panels and modules are then transported to the construction site and connected together to form the final structure. Prefabrication in the factory offers faster and better quality house construction compared with the traditional stick-built approach. As a leader in the industry, ACQBUILT is continuously striving for improved construction technologies and making high quality housing more affordable. ACQBUILT's preliminary research has shown that further improvement in construction efficiency and reduction in production costs for its housing systems can be achieved if the modular roof structure is replaced by panelized units. This is because the volumetric roof modules require considerable space in the factory to produce and a relatively high transportation cost due to the volume they occupy in a transportation vehicle. Furthermore, the roof trusses used in fabricating the roof modulus are purchased from truss fabricators due to the specialized design and fabrication processes of light metal plate roof trusses, which adds to the cost of the housing package. However, further research is required to engineer this new panelized roof system in order to maximize its cost saving potential and to ensure that the new system meets the building code requirements as it would deviate from the traditional construction method, which is recognized by the national and provincial building codes due to its long history of providing safe and affordable housing for Canadians. The main objective of the proposed project is to develop design of panelized roof system to replace the traditional truss-based wood frame truss system. The design of the panelized roof system will take into consideration the manufacturing limitations of ACQBUILT prefabrication production line, site buildability, transportation limitations and placement of insulation materials. The developed design will be implemented in an actual house construction project to evaluate its factory fabrication efficiency and site buildability.
