Greenway Greenhouse Cannabis Corporation (Greenway) is a vertically integrated medicinal cannabis**producer, recently spun off from its parent company, Sunrite Greenhouses Ltd., which has over 45 years of**experience in commercial horticulture and over 4 million square feet of hydroponic production area (0.5**million sq. ft. of this is dedicated to Greenway). Greenway also has access to diverse and unique germplasm**(i.e. seed and tissue) resources, including a collection of 100 high-value cannabis strains gifted legally as seeds**by an expert breeder. Although Greenway has substantial horticultural expertise and infrastructure, it lacks**research capacity in genetics and therefore seeks an academic partner to collaborate on development of a novel,**rapid system for genetically characterizing its germplasm. This will allow Greenway to rationally select a**subset of its strains for further development, breeding, and commercialization. This will also lay a foundation**for genetic mapping of key traits, variety protection, and quality assurance.**To accomplish the collaborative objective of developing a rapid, DNA-based method for defining the**relatedness of cannabis strains, we will leverage DNA sequence information already in the public domain for**1300 cannabis strains, and identify a set of 384 genetic markers (SNPs, single-nucleotide polymorphisms) that**will be used in a genotyping-by-sequencing assay to produce genetic fingerprints for each strain. These genetic**fingerprints will be obtained for the 100 high-value strains and from known strains, to identify clusters of**related germplasm. These clusters will also be compared to information collected about the growth and (in the**future) the chemical properties of each strain. The minimum number of informative markers will be**determined to further streamline the protocol in the future. These results will form the basis of future**collaborations including development of diverse breeding and mapping populations.
