A microgrid is a tremendous asset to improve the grid resilience during short-circuits in the transmission**system. However, the resilience offered by a microgrid will be in jeopardy if the microgrid is not properly**protected during the short-circuits that occur within its own boundaries. Thus, a microgrid requires a reliable**protection system in order to offer the expected features and services. Nevertheless, despite extensive research**into microgrid control and operation, no microgrid-specific relay has been manufactured to date. This study**will investigate the operation of different types of commercially available protective elements for microgrids.**Specific features of DER units' fault behaviour that can lead to relay malfunction will be unveiled, and**potentially vulnerable protective elements and microgrid conditions/topologies will be identified. The results of**this study will reveal to Canadian Solar which protection methods are appropriate for its microgrid testing**facility and how the respective devices should be set up. These results will also reveal how DER units should**be controlled during fault conditions to prevent malfunction of the protection system.
