Our aim in this collaboration with 1-Material is to utilize inkjet printing in order to demonstrate smart transparent nanocellulose paper capable of storing particular information that can only be revealed in the NIR region of the light emission spectra, a region invisible to the unaided eye. Inkjet allows for printing the NIR ink-on-demand and at any specified location on the substrate (nanocellulose paper or other substrates). The printed images can vary from particular security features to human photos of individuals for invisible security batches. This printing approach allows for unlimited freedom in the design of a security feature as well as controlling the level of light emission (photoluminescence) through controlling the concentration and thickness of the printed ink. This is not possible by any other printing technique with such ease and cost-effective manner as is the case with inkjet printing. The NIR emitters will be obtained from 1-Material and optimized into an ink formulation for both inkjet and R2R printing. Our results from the proposed experimental work will be constantly shared with 1-Material in order to orient the optimization of their NIR emitters and develop new ones targeting specific technological applications.
