Most small communities in Canada rely on lagoon systems for their wastewater treatment. Approximately 800**of these treatment facilities across the country have been identified as potentially requiring upgrades to meet**new federal effluent regulations for organic matter, suspended solids and unionized ammonia (Canada Gazette,**2012). Additionally, there are increasingly stringent regulations of total phosphorus discharge to surface water**bodies to control the development of toxic blue-green algae. In Ontario, as with other provinces, wastewater**treatment plant effluent limits for total phosphorus are becoming more stringent, decreasing from typical values**of 1.0 mg/L to as low as 0.02 mg/L, depending upon the receiving water body (Sax, 2017).**This project will field test a discfilter technology developed by Veolia-Water to remove solids and phosphorus**from municipal lagoon effluent as well as from two post-lagoon polishing technologies: AnoxKaldnesTM**Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) system and a Constructed Wetland. The pilot study will take place at**two seasonal discharge lagoon sites in Eastern Ontario: the Town of Casselman aerated lagoon and the Town**of Alfred - facultative lagoon with constructed wetland. This project will optimize the discfilter with respect to**of a number of operating parameters including: filter mesh size, backwash frequency and removal of algae. The**knowledge gained from this study will help Veolia-Water provide enhanced treatment options for small**communities across Canada.
