The sound masking system gains popularity in buildings to overcome an acoustic challenge of open-plan space.**As the growth of the sound masking system, the system has given rise to new challenges, that need to be**properly understood and addressed. There are currently two challenges concerned by SoftdB; spatial and**temporal masking sound optimization for human comfort. The goal of this proposal is, therefore, to evaluate**subjective impression of building occupants, based on Soft dB's sound masking product and its application on**site, to help them optimize their product's design and application impacts on subjective quality of masking**sound perception. To achieve this objective, we plan to address three sub research objectives (RO): 1)**evaluating sound field spatial diffuseness of sound masking system, 2) determining acceptability of unevenness**of sound masking system, and 3) quantifying the subjective and objective benefit of timer-based and**adaptive-level based sound masking systems. The evidence provided by this project will greatly improve noise**control industry's capabilities in producing more efficient sound masking device. It is expected that the**proposed project will not only help SoftdB to improve their products but will also contribute to better building**design technologies in Canada.
