Canada is a vast country containing many climates, with its majority of land exposed to the seasonal frozen weathers. The seasonal frost induces cycles of freeze and thaw, causing early damage to roadways and decreasing their service life. Cement treat base (CTB) is a conventional and most commonly method used to strengthen the road layers in frost susceptible soils, while geocell reinforced bases (GRB) are a relatively emerging technology, which has shown promise in practical applications. At present, the comparative analysis of the performance of CTB and GRB under freeze and thaw is fairly lacking. Utilizing a coupled freeze-thaw and plate loading device housed in UVic, this research project is to elucidate the effect of freeze-thaw on the performance of both CTB and GRB. The outcomes of this research are to identify the conditions in which GRB performs better than CTB and guide the engineer to select a proper reinforcement solution for seasonal frost roadways in Canada.
