Voice problems constitute the most common communication disorder across the lifespan. These include scarring, atrophy or sulcus vocalis, in which part of the vocal folds is lost or replaced by stiff fibrotic tissue. Bioactive injectable scaffolds promote self-regeneration, which could eliminate the need for periodic clinic visits for re-injection. The goal of the project is to investigate the effects of phonation after injection on the mechanical properties of regenerated tissue, and various scaffold compositions. Cell activity and extracellular matrix protein concentration will be monitored in a bioreactor under phonation-relevant mechanical stress over a time period suitable for neo-tissue growth.
