The focus of the proposed research program is the discovery of novel materials that exhibit unusual physical properties. To identify promising candidates, materials are subjected to extreme experimental conditions such as high magnetic fields and low temperatures, in order to reveal unconventional phase transitions and other physical phenomena, such as superconductivity. Analogous to the revolution in semiconductor electronics in the last century, by providing insights into the quantum theory of these strongly interacting electron systems, this research will form the foundation for new technological paradigms, in which novel functional materials are deployed in ways that open up groundbreaking industrial applications.
