英文摘要
The future of our technology, our economy, and our culture demands advancement in materials design and discovery. The development of materials with multiple functionalities is anticipated to provide an enormous technological leap forward. One of the most promising avenues is the design of so-called "spintronic" materials that take advantage of the quantum mechanical spin of charge carriers (electrons) in conducting and semi-conducting materials. Thus, simultaneous manipulation of both the electrical conductivity and magnetic properties of a material are of interest. This research proposal deals with an entirely novel, molecule-based approach to the development of materials that order as ferromagnets and exhibit activated conductivity, a highly desirable combination for future spintronics materials. The results are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of technologically relevant materials and the fundamental understanding of structure/function design in this field.
