My research program will focus on the role that dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays in the marine environment. Marine DOM represents a large pool of carbon compounds that play both an active and a storage role in carbon cycling. Phenomena such as climate change, hypoxia, and acidification cause stress to aquatic systems throughout the world and affect biogeochemical cycling. I will work in sensitive environments (e.g., boreal and coastal regions, the Arctic Ocean), and use advanced analytical techniques, combined with field and experimental work, to decipher the effects of change on DOM composition and cycling in the marine environment.* *
